Our commentary on Ala Moana Hotel’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The protocol document posted on the Hawaii Tourism Association site for the Ala Moana Hotel as of 2/19/21 is two pages long. Among other things, we found:

  • There is no discussion about what protocols will be followed in the event a guest is feeling unwell or has symptoms of COVID-19. Although the protocols state: “An ALLSAFE Officer is available 24/7 for all health and safety concerns and emergencies,” there is no discussion about the details. This raises questions such as: What is an ALLSAFE Officer? How does someone contact them? If a guest is symptomatic, will they be asked to quarantine? What will happen with their room? What measures will the hotel take to clean and disinfect that room, and on what time line? Will housekeepers be told not to enter the room? These and other details should be addressed in this protocol document.
  • The protocols’ discussion of enhanced food and beverage safety standards states, in full: “We have always cared deeply about the safety, quality and environmental impact of our food. At the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra, we have now established new, even higher standards for our restaurants which exceed government and local regulations. Restaurants have reduce seating capacities to allow for physical distancing between each seated group/party of guests. Masks or face coverings are required but may be removed while eating or drinking. The frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of all high-touch areas on tables between dinners have been increased.”Beyond this, there is no discussion in the document about the new restaurant standards mentioned in the quote above. The hotel does not explain which standards exceed government and local regulations, which regulations they exceed, or in what ways they exceed those regulations. Similarly, they do not give any detail about the increased frequency of cleaning and disinfecting high-touch areas on tables, or explanation of what those high-touch areas are.
  • The protocols state that employees are screened with a temperature check and health questionnaire upon arrival to work, and that guests are also screened with a temperature check and health questionnaire when they check in.
  • There is no discussion anywhere in the protocols about contact tracing.
  • While the protocols claim that hand sanitizer stations have been placed in key areas, they do not list any of those areas. Similarly, the protocols state “Health and hygiene reminders are located throughout the property for all guests,” but there is no further discussion of where those reminders are located.
  • The section entitled “Enhanced Cleaning and Hygiene Standards” states, in full: “Our enhanced in-room cleaning program uses EPA-approved disinfectants and cleaning materials and is now standard at the Ala Moana Hotel by Mantra. Our enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols are used to clean guest rooms with specific attention on high-touch areas and items.” There are no further details in the protocols about what the enhanced in-room cleaning program is, or what any of the enhanced cleaning and sanitizing protocols are.

Check the HTA site to see if protocols are updated.

I’m currently furloughed but was on a property inspection on Saturday January 23, 2021. I was very amazed at all the safety improvements that were put into place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have hand sanitizing stations throughout the public areas, plexiglass guards up, and social distancing markers all in place for the safety and well being of all guests/team members. But, I did not see anyone monitoring the elevators to make sure that the capacity was not exceeded for social distancing purposes.
