Our commentary on The Modern Honolulu COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The State of Hawaii issued an emergency proclamation on November 23, 2020 requiring hotels to publish their COVID-19 Health & Safety plans and submit it to the state’s Hawaii Tourism Authority (“HTA”). Below is our commentary on each hotel’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Plans they way they appear on the HTA website so that guests and hospitality workers have a better understanding of these plans.

As of 1/5/21, the HTA webpage did not list protocol documents for The Modern Honolulu.

According to the Governor of Hawaii’s 15th Emergency Proclamation, which was issued on November 16, 2020:

“All hotel operators shall publish the COVID-19 Health and Safety Plans of each property they operate, including by making it available on their websites and by submitting it to the Hawaii Tourism Authority for posting on its website.”

Hotel workers have been preparing for the reopening of the tourism economy by conducting hotel inspections. See our inspection reports below:

    Management continues to disrespect union workers, standards, and Contract. They continue to schedule improperly, instead of by Seniority.
    Modern management continues to do Bargain Unit Work instead of bringing workers back from furloughs.
    Management also disciplined a Cook for calling out sick for three days, after receiving his vaccine shot and having a doctors note and his COVID-19 Vaccination Card with the date of his appointment on it.
    Due to NO Daily Cleaning, rooms are taking longer to clean.

    Modern is still running skeleton crews even though we’ve been above 80% consistently since spring break.

    The lack of proper scheduling creates workload issues, which in turn creates unsafe working conditions, which puts guests at higher risks. Even as mask mandates relax and more and more tourists are traveling again its very disappointing to see the Modern refuse to schedule more workers.

    Modern needs to do better and needs to be better. For their guests and their workers.

    Bring back more people to work. Bring back daily room cleaning. Bring back the service and luxury our guests expect and deserve.

    Pros:
    We have signs for mask wearing and social distancing all over the property

    Hand sanitizer stations are placed in convenient locations throughout the hotel

    Plexiglass dividers to provide additional protection for workers and guests are well placed at locations with high guest/worker interactions ie. front desk, bar/restaurant, etc.

    Sanitizer/disinfectant and placards are provided for workers to clean all areas of high traffic ie. bar/restaurant areas, pool area, etc.

    Cons:
    No temperature checks for guests or workers yet

    We still don’t have daily cleaning of guests rooms

    We could use more signs instructing guests and workers on proper use of PPE ie. proper mask wearing for guests, proper disposal of gloves and other PPE for workers.

    I feel like at the Modern we are doing great job overall. But there’s always room for improvement.
