Our commentary on Royal Grove Waikiki’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The protocol document posted on the Hawaii Tourism Association site for Royal Grove Waikiki of 2/18/21 is 18 pages long. Among other things, we found:

  • The only discussion about COVID-related testing of hotel guests states: “Visitors will be asked if they have been knowingly in contact with anyone contaminated or contaminated themselves for the safety of others. In many properties this may be done virtually.” The protocols do not state when the hotel might conduct temperature checks for guests, although it does have protocols for what to do in the event guests have elevated temperature readings.
  • As far as testing of employees, the document states: “The hotels and resorts will, to the extent reasonably possible, conduct temperature testing of employees.”
  • The protocols contain no mention of whether the hotel will provide paid sick leave to workers who are quarantining, awaiting test results or who have been diagnosed as COVID-positive.
  • The hotel presents information on the frequency of cleaning of certain areas and equipment, including the following examples among other things:
    • To be sanitized at least once per hour: guest and garage elevators; entry doors; credenzas; handrails; smoking areas; exterior benches; trash bins; vending machines; front-of-house restrooms; restaurant & bar host stations, service carts, beverage stations; baggage doors.
    • To be sanitized at least once every four hours: back-of-house restrooms; front services & transportation offices, desks, counters workspaces and related equipment.
    • To be sanitized after each use: scooters; wheelchairs; bell carts; pool chaise lounge chairs and cabana guest contact surfaces; front office credit card devices, pens and registration countertops.
    • To be sanitized at the start and end of each shift: housekeeping carts, trolleys and equipment; bar & restaurant POS terminals (as well as between users if there are multiple users).
  • Contact tracing: The protocols do not state whether or not the hotel will inform employees if they have come in contact with a guest or another employee who is COVID-positive or suspected of being COVID-positive.

Check the HTA site to see if updated protocols are posted.
