This website has information on Hawaii hotels’ COVID-19 health & safety protocols.

Our commentary on the Sheraton Maui COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The State of Hawaii issued an emergency proclamation on November 23, 2020 requiring hotels to publish their COVID-19 Health & Safety plans and submit it to the state’s Hawaii Tourism Authority (“HTA”). Below is our commentary on each hotel’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Plans they way they appear on the HTA website so that guests and hospitality workers have a better understanding of these plans.

Regarding the COVID-19 protocols for Sheraton Maui posted on the HTA website as of 1/5/21:

  • There is no mention of contact tracing. Guests and workers reading these protocols will be left with no information about whether the hotel will collect the information that would be needed to determine who a sick guest or worker was exposed to. They also will not know if the hotel will inform them if someone they were in contact with a person who tests positive for Covid-19.
  • The protocols have no discussion about whether guests or employees will be subject to any form of testing whatsoever, including temperature checks, upon or any time after arrival at the property. Guests and workers will not know from reading these protocols whether the hotel intends to make use of this basic safety measure.
  • The document contains no protocols about what the hotel or its workers or its guests should do in the event a guest or a worker shows COVID symptoms.
  • There is no discussion about how any of the protocols will be enforced. What will the hotel do if guests refuse to wear masks in public places? Whose job will it be to enforce these rules?

Check the HTA site to see if updated protocols are posted.

Hotel Inspections

Hotel workers have been preparing for the reopening of the tourism economy by conducting hotel inspections. See our inspection reports below:

More restaurant outlets are opening and great to see more associates returning. Every outlet should be open to provide service to the guests and for a safe working environment. Mask enforcement continues to be a challenge at pool areas.

At this hotel the management disciplined a worker for not enforcing face mask policy. The worker was given a written warning but shop stewards and committee fought back to management and as a result the discipline that was given to worker was expunged by management!

At this hotel the Union workers fought hard to bring back a Union position “Seamstress” job that was a non union job pre pandemic. This position is now a Union job!

At this hotel they are now providing daily housekeeping service for our guest. The workers in all departments were affected by not having daily service when they first opened but the Union fought hard to have daily service restored.

The Maitai Bar opened last week, after being closed since March due to COVID-19. The workers immediately alerted the safety committee (a group of Sheraton workers who are dedicated to making sure the hotel is as safe as possible for both the workers and the guests) that the hotel management had not installed plexiglass barriers or signage reminding people that masks and social distancing is required,. The safety committee quickly reached out to hotel management imploring them to put these safety measures in place. The hotel management acted quickly to install the necessary safety measures requested by the workers. UNITE HERE Local 5members are actively involved with the management to ensure the safety of our workers and guests. Union workers are not afraid to stand up for what is right both for ourselves and our guests. As a traveler looking to stay with us at Sheraton Maui, you can feel confident knowing that we union workers continue to work with the management team to make sure you are as safe as possible when staying at our hotel.

My boyfriend works at the Marriott Maui Ocean club, he got furloughed from April 2020 until now. The company covered 100% medical and its a family plan too. So why at Sheraton Maui can’t pay for all the workers medical? I love working with this company, sharing my aloha spirit with the guest and my coworkers. We are the one who working hard dealing with the guest everyday. We deserved to get medical. Marriott can pay their employees medical. Why Sheraton don’t do it???? Its pandemic and everyone is struggling about medical.sheraton please do it right. Take care of your hard working workers…..

I work at this property, I’m just concerned about the safety of our guests and for all workers. They do temperature check for all workers. But they don’t do temperature check for the guest coming to stay at this beautiful hotel. I have been eating in the small restaurant and thank god they check the temperature before they let you in. We are talking about the big corporations, why they don’t take the guest temperature. My thing is, if they care about the safety of the guest and workers, they should do the temperature check…..

I love working at Sheraton Maui. Unfortunately because of COVID-19 many of us have been furloughed since March. The Sheraton Maui reopened in November, but with very limited staff. It’s a shame that more of our food and beverage outlets are not open yet. I feel badly for the guests who spend their hard-earned money on a vacation at Sheraton Maui, but are unable to enjoy all of the amenities and true aloha spirit that we workers offer.

I work at this hotel, I’m just concerned about our safety. They check the temperatures for all the workers but they don’t check the guests temperature. So how can we be safe if they don’t check the guest coming in to stay at this beautiful hotel .
I have been eating in the small restaurant and they check the temperature before they let them in. This is the small businesses I’m talking about. This is a big corporations , why they can’t provide the temperature check for the safety of our guests and workers.
