This website has information on Hawaii hotels’ COVID-19 health & safety protocols.

Our commentary on the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The State of Hawaii issued an emergency proclamation on November 23, 2020 requiring hotels to publish their COVID-19 Health & Safety plans and submit it to the state’s Hawaii Tourism Authority (“HTA”). Below is our commentary on each hotel’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Plans they way they appear on the HTA website so that guests and hospitality workers have a better understanding of these plans.

Regarding the COVID-19 protocols for Sheraton Princess Kaiulani posted on the HTA site as of 1/5/21:

  • There is no mention of contact tracing. Guests and workers reading these protocols will be left with no information about whether the hotel will collect the information that would be needed to determine who a sick guest or worker was exposed to. They also will not know if the hotel will inform them if someone they were in contact with a person who tests positive for Covid-19.
  • The protocols have no discussion about whether guests or employees will be subject to any form of testing whatsoever, including temperature checks, upon or any time after arrival at the property. Guests and workers will not know from reading these protocols whether the hotel intends to make use of this basic safety measure.
  • The document contains no protocols about what the hotel or its workers or its guests should do in the event a guest or a worker shows COVID symptoms.
  • There is no discussion about how any of the protocols will be enforced. What will the hotel do if guests refuse to wear masks in public places? Whose job will it be to enforce these rules?

Check the HTA site to see if updated protocols are posted.

Hotel Inspections

Hotel workers have been preparing for the reopening of the tourism economy by conducting hotel inspections. See our inspection reports below:

A guest was transported to the hospital on 5/1/21 and was confirmed to have Covid-19. While having symptoms, the daughter whom was staying in the same room with her mother was traversing the property and in contact with multiple hotel employees. With the mother now in the hospital and the daughter quarantined in their room why hasn’t any contact tracing been conducted to see which staff had contact with this positive case?

A worker at PK contracted Covid and was told they need to stay home and quarantine for 10 days, but they have to use their sick leave or vacation if they want to get paid. What happens when a worker who doesn’t have any vacation or sick leave left gets Covid and can’t afford to stay home without pay? Will they feel obliged to come to work anyway and spread the virus to coworkers and guests?

I am a furloughed worker from this hotel. Our union has a safety committee that does inspections of many hotels, union and non-union. I last went on a safety inspection of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in November 2020. While there, I witnessed a few guests walking through the lobby or sitting in the lobby without a mask or wearing their mask below their chin and security was present and did not ask them to put a mask on. A guest who looked like she came from the beach even walked up to a security guard without a mask and he only asked to see her room key and did not ask her to wear a mask. Marriott has stated that they are committed to clean, but they have cut their lobby attendant staff down so thin that they are doing less cleaning than pre-Covid. Telephone operators are responsible for monitoring the fire alarms and notifying the fire department as well as other departments anytime there’s a fire alarm, yet at certain times of the day there is only 1 operator working to handle all of that in case of emergencies whereas pre-Covid there would be up to 5 operators working at a time. There are no food outlets open for guests to eat at, only grab and go meals like salads and sandwiches.

On a positive note, there is a lot of signage regarding mask wearing and social distancing. Lots of hand sanitizer dispensers.

Management should put more signage on the floors and flexiglass on the counter frontdesk.

Housekeepers work so hard they cannot even eat their lunch, too many floors to travel and that managers questioning them why they cannot finish their rooms.

Management not following safety protocol – not enough PPE for hskprs, fiber cloth, not enough workers to sanitize crucial areas.
