This website has information on Hawaii hotels’ COVID-19 health & safety protocols.

Our commentary on the Sheraton Waikiki COVID-19 Health & Safety Protocols

The State of Hawaii issued an emergency proclamation on November 23, 2020 requiring hotels to publish their COVID-19 Health & Safety plans and submit it to the state’s Hawaii Tourism Authority (“HTA”). Below is our commentary on each hotel’s COVID-19 Health & Safety Plans they way they appear on the HTA website so that guests and hospitality workers have a better understanding of these plans.

Regarding the COVID-19 protocols for Sheraton Waikiki posted on the HTA website as of 1/5/21:

  • There is no mention of contact tracing. Guests and workers reading these protocols will be left with no information about whether the hotel will collect the information that would be needed to determine who a sick guest or worker was exposed to. They also will not know if the hotel will inform them if someone they were in contact with a person who tests positive for Covid-19.
  • The protocols have no discussion about whether guests or employees will be subject to any form of testing whatsoever, including temperature checks, upon or any time after arrival at the property. Guests and workers will not know from reading these protocols whether the hotel intends to make use of this basic safety measure.
  • The document contains no protocols about what the hotel or its workers or its guests should do in the event a guest or a worker shows COVID symptoms.
  • There is no discussion about how any of the protocols will be enforced. What will the hotel do if guests refuse to wear masks in public places? Whose job will it be to enforce these rules?

Check the HTA site to see if updated protocols are posted.

Hotel Inspections

Hotel workers have been preparing for the reopening of the tourism economy by conducting hotel inspections. See our inspection reports below:

  • Sheraton Waikiki inspection – October 21, 2020
  • Sheraton Waikiki inspection – September 23, 2020
  • Sheraton Waikiki inspection – July 17, 2020

Sheraton waikiki is the best place to stay…. good food, nice view, mountain and ocean was so beautiful, enjoying with my family while having couple drinks. They should protect the workers, and guests should check their temperature as well they should do the temperature check every single day. Mandatory to check everybody’s temperature. Safety first

Doesn’t this hotel want to continue doing business? What are they waiting for? Don’t they know that covid isn’t going away anytime soon? If restaurants were able to adapt to covid by changing their approach, many of them have been doing more takeout, then why can’t hotels also? It’s clear that Hawaii isn’t getting much travelers coming in, so why not offer more attractive packages or discounts to local people for now? It’s a win-win. Then with more people able to stay, occupancy rises, and more workers can go back to work. Are the hotels just waiting for covid to end and everything go back to the way it was before? Wakeup! That’s not going to happen. Businesses that thrive are those that learn to adapt to change.

Aloha everyone I hope all is well !
Yesterday my coworker Told me as essential workers shouldn’t we be able to get vaccinated, and I thought to myself makes sense to me. So I brought it up at the zoom meeting Yesterday at 5 o’clock where My organizer and Union staff members and other local five members from other properties gave feedback . Honestly not comfortable doing this post but I was encouraged to!

Im currently Furloughed but just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope when the time comes the transition from low occupancy to medium/high occupancy goes as smoothly as possible. I hope each department is updated and its workers are prepped with updates as well (very important) All of this is to give the customer the best experience.

This is for Marriott and Kyoya!!!We are asking these two companies to please implement a daily service to all the Kyoya properties and Marriott Waikiki. We need the worker’s back to work. And also if there’s a daily service , the gsts are safe and the workers as well coz the room is being ckeaned everyday. If no daily service, the room is very dirty upon check out and more virus and bacteria are present in the room.

As a proud worker we rely on safety measures put in place to best serve & protect our returning guest as demonstrated in many circumstances.
I encourage the hotel owners/Mgmt. to consider vaccinating employees. The weight of the industry in Hawaii warrants this.
Be the 1st in Hawaii to do so & move ahead of competition & fill your hotels once again with guest & workers.

Poor safety protocol, need to push management to enforce safety protocols for the safety of the workers and guests as well.

Aloha! This is Sabrina, housekeeper in this hotel. I went back to walk around the property with the union organizer yesterday 01/25/2021. We really need to give a big applaud to the housekeeper that are working now. Management should not be questioned why they can’t finish their daily assignment. Following are the comparisons of the differences between before and after COVID, how housekeeper works. 1. In General each housekeeper has their own station on the same floor, one floor has 4 station, the rooms they’re cleaning is next to each other. But now, one housekeeper watch one or two floors😭that’s how many stations. Room are from 1 to 65, because of COVID, hotel are putting the guest here and there. Imagine if you are the one who is pushing a fully loaded cart going back-and-forth. No doubt that is physically and time consuming. 2 Check out rooms. Because hotel only providing request only daily service, without daily maintaining (towels, rubbish, mildew….)+ the special cleaning for COVID, how many more time you need to spend in the rooms. That’s more but. I think hotel really not to consider their workers as well as their guests. Managements are looking for quality or quantity

We need to push management to bring in more workers Our section runner(2)!is not enough. A lot of dirty linens and bags of rubbish were left behind in our area after work. When we come back the next morning we can still see them mon the landing.
We wanna make sure that we are cleaning the c/o rooms after 24 hrs . Some hskprs get in to a c/o rooms and it looked like they’ve just c/o coz water by the sink and on the tub is still fresh.. or sometimes they assigned c/o room and hskpr saw the guests just checking out.

If Sheraton Management and Company really cares for our guests, in order to follow the safety and cleanliness protocols that they’ve been putting out they should put more people to work. What I can see now is they’re taking advantage of the situation in cutting down on staffing. Company should stop in just focusing on making profit. Calling out the company! It’s humanity that’s calling here! Workers are also risking their life, doing just as what the Boss says!

The company didn’t follow the rules on workers regarding pair up after 6:00 pm. I’m so scared when I’m working alone at the upper floors. I demand that the company should take care of their workers.

The company not following the safety protocol that we got trained at like like proper PPE, safety protection gown, not enough micro fiber cloth, etc.

Management need to train workers to be called if somebody call in sick and apply for vacation especially holiday seasons and add workers to pick up the afternoon service or late service

Hi my name is Sergio, a cook here at the Sheraton Waikiki. Local 5 union is doing a great job for pushing the hotel to do more safety procedures. The hotel checks the worker’s temperature before entering the property, which is awesome to me. In doing that we protect our fellow coworkers and our guests. What about checking the guests’ temperature when they check in ther hotel or enter the restaurant? The hotel failed to do that. The hotel should do any measure to protect the workers.

I joined with the organizer to walk around inside the Sheraton Property and i noticed that the management need to add more workers to do the jobs like proper handling of dirty linens and most of the checkout rooms are dirty and that’s the reason why housekeeper forgot to follow the proper safety just to finish with their assign rooms

Sheraton need to schedule more workers . I’m a housekeeper in Sheraton Waikiki and everyday I can not eat lunch because the room is harder to clean now, they don’t offer daily housekeeping so sometimes the check out is really hard to clean.
And if we return room the manager argue why you cannot finish the room.
